When it comes to children sometimes the simplest things are the greatest. Recreational skills such as fishing, jumping rope and hopscotch are fading as computer games and other devices are taking the place of imagination. When I was a child we built forts in the living room out of pillows, performed puppet shows for our parents and created obstacle courses to run in our backyard.

Teach your children to enjoy the simple pleasures of life such as listening to the birds sing or cloud watching. Encourage them to use their imagination to write a short story, a play or a puppet show.

Look under a rock, plant seeds, make leaf rubbings or just simply pass a ball, but do something together (grown-ups can play too!) and never stop learning.
