Definition of angina pectoris
|
|
angina pectoris: A reversible condition in which the heart muscle temporarily does not receive a sufficient supply of blood. This decreased blood supply to the heart occurs when the coronary arteries are blocked with cholesterol and fatty deposits, limiting the supply that is necessary for the heart to function. When restricted blood flow to the heart occurs, the person may experience discomfort, most typically in the chest. This discomfort may be in the chest, arm, shoulder, back, or neck and may be described as pressure, burning, aching, or a squeezing pain. Over 60 million Americans suffer from heart disease.
