.) If you don't already have one purchase a cordless phone . This is essential so that you can move freely about the house to check on small children or get away from older ones that may be fighting during an important or unexpected call.

.) Working at home has it's advantages and disadvantages. There will be times that you need to focus on work without being constantly interupted. Be sure to have a stash of special things for your children to do unsupervised during these times. Small children like sticker books, coloring books and crayons. A little bit older could do an art project, or play with playdough and almost every age likes to play on the computer. (but not your work computer, little fingers can do a lot of damage)

.) Always keep a pen and notepad at each telephone to jot down names, phone numbers and other important information.

.)Use voice mail and caller ID to your advantage. Don't think that you have to answer every phone call right then. That's part of the beauty of working from home, you schedule your own work hours and you can be there when your family needs you. You are not a slave to the phone anymore! Having a separate business line is a good thing when you can afford it. Be sure to create your voice mail message when you house is quiet.

.) If you have small children you will need to childproof your home office. Store paper clips, pushpins, staples and other potentially dangerouse items out of children's reach.

Time management is critical when working at home

.)Schedule a weekly office-duties day. Back up computer files, send out invoices, tend to the books, and clean up your desk. Taking time to be organized will save you time and frustration in the long run.

.)Learn to work in small chucks of time possibly 2 to 3 hours at most. Then spend some time with your family, put a load of clothes in the wash, start dinner or just rest.

.) Insist on "do not disturb" time with your older children. I tell my 8 year old "do not come into my office until the clock say this time". It's usually only one hour at a time and sometimes she gets busy and waits even longer but when she does come in it's the signal for me to stop working and spend some time with her.

.) Create some clever emergency lines to politely end a telephone conversation in case the kids won't leave you alone.

.)Probably one of the hardest things about working from home is staying motivated. Create an encouragement file with complimentary letters, awards, and the reasons why you want to work at home. I'm sure you don't miss the stress, the commute, getting home late or manatory overtime and now you have more time to spend with your kids and the flexibility you need with a family.
